Diesel (diesel fuel, CAS 68334-30-5) is a middle-distillate liquid fuel obtained from crude oil refining, typically pale yellow to colourless with a characteristic odour. It is the primary energy source for heavy transport, agriculture, and industry.

Transport: powers heavy trucks, logistics fleets, and marine vessels; unlike petrol, its demand is largely inelastic because freight and shipping cannot easily be curtailed.
Agriculture: consumed by tractors, harvesters, and other farm machinery, especially during harvest seasons.
Industry & construction: fuels engineering machinery, port equipment, and emergency power generation.
Heating: used for domestic heating in some regions.
Strategic reserves: held and released by governments as a strategic commodity; China treats diesel as a strategic material prioritised for industry over private cars.

China's diesel output comes mainly from state-owned refiners and large integrated private refineries, with a relatively fixed petrol-to-diesel yield ratio. Domestic policy prioritises supply security for production and logistics, and exports have at times been restricted to protect domestic stocks.

Sinopec – largest A-share diesel producer, with nationwide retail and distribution networks.
PetroChina – second-largest producer, a main supplier in northern China and via national pipeline networks.
Shanghai Petrochemical – significant producer also advancing B5 biodiesel blending.
Rongsheng Petrochemical – integrated refining and chemicals, with adjustable diesel-to-petrol ratio.
Hengli Petrochemical – integrated refining and chemicals, balancing fuels and chemical products.
