How are Russian refinery disruptions tightening the global diesel market?
Sustained attacks on Russian refining infrastructure are reshaping middle distillate balances. Russian refining runs have been revised down toward 4 million b/d for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. Combined Middle East and Russian diesel exports fell to roughly 520,000 b/d in August, down about 75% year on year, with higher US and Asian volumes only partly filling the gap. Global seaborne gasoline and diesel exports averaged 4.7 million b/d in the first eight months, down 10%. The squeeze pushed US diesel crack spreads above USD 100/bbl in September, with inventories at multi-decade lows. Q4 seasonal demand could widen cracks further.

The underappreciated channel is jet fuel. Diesel and jet share middle distillate cut, so refineries maximising jet output to cover shortages mechanically reduce diesel yield. That capacity trade-off, not crude availability, is the binding constraint into winter.
