Overview

Maleic anhydride (顺丁烯二酸酐, maleic anhydride, MA, CAS 108-31-6) is a white crystalline solid with a pungent odour, a melting point of 51–56 °C, and a tendency to sublime; it is a key organic chemical intermediate produced mainly from benzene or n-butane oxidation.

Plastics & resins: raw material for unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), alkyd resins, and plasticisers.
Coatings: used in insulating varnishes, baking enamels, and clear lacquers.
Chemicals: intermediate for butanediol, tetrahydrofuran, fumaric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid.
Pharmaceuticals & agrochemicals: used in making drugs such as long-acting sulfonamides and pesticides like malathion.
Other: paper treatment agents, oil-ink additives, and coupling-agent feedstocks.

China's production is dominated by the n-butane oxidation route, with benzene oxidation still in use; capacity is concentrated among large petrochemical players, and the market is broadly self-sufficient with some export activity. Downstream demand is driven by UPR for wind power and glass fibre applications.
