What are the key downstream applications and growth drivers for maleic anhydride in China?

Maleic anhydride is a versatile intermediate, ranking as the world's third-largest anhydride after phthalic and acetic anhydride. Its primary outlet is unsaturated polyester resin (UPR), used in construction, marine, and automotive composites. Beyond UPR, MA serves dozens of industries: it is a raw material for alkyd resins, lubricant additives, agrochemicals like malathion, and food acids such as malic and tartaric acid. In pharmaceuticals, it feeds into long-acting sulfonamide drugs. A notable emerging application is in coupling agents, where MA's dual hydrophilic/hydrophobic structure bridges inorganic fillers and organic polymers—critical for advanced composites. The fastest-growing demand driver is biodegradable plastics, particularly PBAT, where MA is a key feedstock. China's 'plastic ban' policies have accelerated this segment, creating structural demand growth that offsets mature UPR markets. This diversification makes MA demand less cyclical than in the past, though UPR still sets the base tone.
