Phenol (benzenol, carbolic acid, CAS 108-95-2) is a white crystalline solid with a sweet, tarry odor, melting near 40–42°C and partially soluble in water. It is a fundamental aromatic intermediate whose hydroxyl group engages in p-π conjugation with the benzene ring, underpinning its acidity and electrophilic substitution reactivity.

Industrial: key raw material for bisphenol A, phenolic resins, caprolactam, and aniline; also used in adipic acid and plasticizer production.
Pharmaceutical: historically used as a disinfectant (carbolic acid) and in topical preparations such as phenol ointments and suppositories.
Chemical synthesis: serves as a precursor for aspirin-related compounds and various fine chemicals.
Environmental: oxidation products in aqueous systems include catechol, hydroquinone, and quinones, relevant to wastewater treatment studies.
