The 82% import dependency is a structural vulnerability. Buyers should track Indonesian export policies and palm oil futures closely, as these move Chinese glycerin prices more than domestic demand shifts. Also note that epichlorohydrin now consumes over 60% of glycerin, so any slowdown in that sector could soften prices despite tight feedstock.
Don't overlook the epichlorohydrin link. With over 60% of glycerin going into that downstream, watch China's epoxy resin demand and any new ECH capacity. A slowdown there can offset even strong palm oil cost support, capping glycerin upside. Also, quarterly import arrivals of crude glycerin are a key leading indicator.
For chemical buyers, this niche demand is small but growing. Food-grade glycerin suppliers could see incremental orders from sports nutrition brands. However, the volume is negligible versus industrial uses. More relevant is that glycerin's humectant properties drive its use in food processing—meat, bakery, and tobacco—which provides a stable, non-cyclical demand base.
