Industrial: primary feedstock for polyester fibers, PET bottle resins, and films.
Textile: upstream raw material for polyester filament and staple, with demand tied to downstream weaving and garment sectors.
Automotive: used as an antifreeze and coolant base fluid.
Chemical: intermediate for the production of resins, plasticizers, and other glycol derivatives.

China is the world's largest producer, accounting for roughly half of global capacity, with output split between ethylene-based (via ethylene oxide hydration) and coal-based (via oxalate ester) routes. The country remains a net importer, with a dependency of around 27-28%, largely sourced from the Middle East.
