Buyers should not treat DOTP as a drop-in at identical loading. Because efficiency is roughly 10% lower than DOP, formulators often need slightly higher phr to hit the same hardness, which narrows the apparent cost gap. It also blends with DOP in any ratio, so a partial switch is a practical way to test performance before committing fully.
A practical screen is to ask suppliers for feedstock origin and batch color data. Genuine virgin-route DOTP shows near-colorless liquid and stable APHA values. If a quote looks unusually cheap, suspect recycled feedstock, which can pass basic specs yet fail in long-life cable or food-contact applications.
Watch the feedstock split carefully. PTA-based DOTP and recycled-PET-based DOTP can differ in color and consistency even at the same spec. For high-grade cable compounds, insist on virgin isooctanol and PTA routes, and verify color and ester content batch by batch rather than trusting the label alone.
