What is driving DOTP supply and demand in China's plasticizer market?
DOTP's rise is tied to the broader para-xylene and PTA chain. China's PTA capacity keeps expanding, with the world's largest single-train unit at 3 million tons/year now online, securing feedstock for downstream esters. DOTP is made from isooctanol and PTA, or increasingly from recycled PET via alcoholysis and re-esterification. Isooctanol alone absorbs 80-87% of its consumption into plasticizers, so alcohol and PTA pricing set the floor. Demand is shifting as EU and US buyers reject ortho-phthalates, pushing exporters toward DOTP. The catch: much DOTP output uses recycled or off-grade feedstock, and product quality tracks raw material quality closely.
