Overview

1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP, N-methylpyrrolidone, CAS 872-50-4) is a colourless, transparent, slightly amine-odoured oily liquid with a high boiling point (202 °C), low viscosity, and miscibility with water and most organic solvents. It is a strong polar aprotic solvent, mainly used as the PVDF binder solvent in lithium-ion battery cathodes.

Batteries: dissolves PVDF binder and disperses cathode active material, conductive agent, and carbon nanotube slurry; acts as the coating carrier and pore-forming agent during drying, and is recovered and recycled.
Electronics: cleaning agent and solvent for electronic materials.
Coatings & plastics: solvent for polymers, pigments, and insulating materials.
Pharmaceuticals & agrochemicals: reaction and formulation solvent; also used in chemical synthesis and cleaning agents.

China is the world's largest NMP producer, having replaced earlier imports from BASF, Mitsubishi Chemical, and Lyondell from 2008 onward. Production is mainly battery-grade (purity typically ≥99.9%), with capacity concentrated among over a dozen producers; the chain runs from γ-butyrolactone (GBL) feedstock to NMP, and large volumes are exported to North America, Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the Middle East. Lithium batteries account for roughly 80% of demand, and capacity continues to expand on strong power- and storage-battery growth.
