Acrylonitrile (CAS 107-13-1) is a colourless, volatile liquid with the formula C3H3N, soluble in water, and a key industrial monomer derived from propylene ammoxidation.

Carbon fiber: serves as the essential precursor for polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fiber, where raw-material purity directly determines final fiber strength and modulus.
ABS/SAN resins: copolymerised with butadiene and styrene to produce ABS, with acrylonitrile content (typically 20–30%) governing chemical resistance and tensile strength.
Acrylic fibers: polymerised into nitrile-based fibres for textiles, including UV-protective and moisture-wicking fabrics.
Other: used in nitrile rubber, adiponitrile, and specialty chemicals.

China has scaled up acrylonitrile technology from catch-up to global leadership, highlighted by the world's largest single-train 400,000 t/y unit at Zhenhai Refining, operating stably since 2025. Domestic capacity is concentrated among large producers, with feedstock via propylene ammoxidation and MTO/PDH routes; output largely serves domestic downstream ABS and carbon-fiber demand.
