Vinyl chloride (chloroethene, CAS 75-01-4) is a colorless, flammable gas with a faint sweet odor, slightly soluble in water, and is the essential monomer for producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics.

Industrial: polymerized into PVC resin, which is processed with stabilizers and plasticizers into plastics for construction (pipes, window frames, wire insulation), packaging, and consumer goods.
Health & safety: classified by the WHO as a Group 1 carcinogen; acute inhalation causes dizziness and liver damage, while chronic low-dose exposure raises the risk of liver cancer and other malignancies.
Environmental: denser than air, it accumulates in low-lying areas; incomplete combustion can release toxic byproducts such as phosgene, hydrogen chloride, and dioxins.

China is a major global producer of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), with capacity concentrated in integrated chlor-alkali complexes along the eastern coast. Production is primarily captive for downstream PVC manufacturing, and the market is broadly balanced with regional supply-demand variations.
