Ammonia (NH₃, CAS 7664-41-7) is a colourless, pungent gas that liquefies at −33 °C under atmospheric pressure, making it easy to store and transport. It is the second-largest hydrogen-containing compound in nature after methane and serves as a foundational chemical for fertilisers, industrial materials, and emerging clean-energy applications.

Fertiliser: the primary feedstock for nitrogen fertilisers such as urea and ammonium nitrate, underpinning global food production.
Hydrogen carrier: stores hydrogen at high density via synthesis from green hydrogen and nitrogen, releasing high-purity hydrogen upon decomposition.
Fuel: a carbon-free fuel candidate for direct ammonia fuel cells, ammonia-cracking hydrogen supply, and marine shipping.
Industrial: used in refrigeration, wastewater ammonia recovery, and chemical synthesis.

China is the world's largest synthetic ammonia producer, with output based mainly on coal gasification routes, while global capacity concentrates in low-cost natural-gas regions. Green ammonia projects are scaling slowly, with pilot capacity additions in China and elsewhere, though the sector is expected to expand significantly as renewable hydrogen costs fall.
