How will green ammonia projects reshape China's ammonia supply-demand balance through 2030?
China's ammonia market is entering a structural shift as large-scale green hydrogen-ammonia integration projects come online. The Songyuan project alone adds 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia capacity, while Xinjiang plans 690,000 tonnes of synthetic ammonia annually. These projects are not just capacity additions; they signal a policy-backed pivot toward ammonia as an energy carrier, with the 15th Five-Year Plan explicitly naming hydrogen energy as a growth point. Near-term pricing remains anchored to traditional coal-based production, with Shandong liquid ammonia expected to trade at 2400-2600 yuan/tonne. However, as green ammonia volumes scale and international offtake agreements like the 15-year Reliance-Samsung deal materialize, a dual-track market is emerging: conventional ammonia for fertilizers and premium green ammonia for shipping and hydrogen transport. This bifurcation will complicate price forecasting and create arbitrage opportunities for integrated producers.
