The export channel is becoming a structural release valve. China shipped over 1.1 million tonnes of acetic acid in 2022, with India taking more than half. As domestic capacity keeps expanding—including the world's largest single-train unit at 1.5 million tonnes—export growth will be essential to balance the market and support prices.
This regulatory boundary also protects the premium market for traditionally brewed vinegars like Shanxi aged vinegar. If industrial acetic acid were allowed as a food ingredient, it would commoditize the entire category and destroy consumer trust. The enforcement actions signal that regulators view this as a food safety issue, not just a labeling violation.
This coal-versus-oil spread also explains why acetic acid can decouple from methanol pricing at times. Domestic supply concentration is high—top five producers hold nearly half of capacity—so any unplanned outage or export surge can quickly tighten the market and widen margins beyond what feedstock costs alone would suggest.
