It is the simplest and most industrially significant conjugated diene, characterized by its low boiling point (-4.5°C) and density of 0.62 g/mL at 20°C, serving as a fundamental building block in the chemical industry.

Industrial: primarily used as a monomer for synthetic rubbers, including polybutadiene and styrene-butadiene rubber, and as a feedstock for adiponitrile production.
Fine chemicals: serves as an intermediate for manufacturing fragrances, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and specialty detergents.
Chemical synthesis: undergoes 1,4-addition reactions with reagents like hydrogen bromide, yielding products such as 1-bromo-2-butene, which are valuable in organic synthesis.
