DCPD is transitioning from a commodity modifier resin feedstock to a specialty material enabler. The most dynamic growth area is polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD), a reaction injection molding (RIM) engineering plastic combining high impact strength with high flexural modulus—properties previously unavailable in a single material. PDCPD's low viscosity (~30 cps) and exothermic polymerization allow energy-efficient processing, consuming only 1/4 the energy of PP and 1/10 of PC per kilogram produced. Global DCPD market is estimated at $1.3 billion in 2025, projected to reach $2.2 billion by 2035 (5.1% CAGR), with Asia Pacific holding 58% share. Another high-value outlet is cyclic olefin polymers (COC/COP), where DCPD reacts with ethylene to form norbornene—critical for optical and electronic applications.
