Based on Shandong, n-butanol closed today at RMB 8,700–8,800/mt, in line with morning expectations. Today, domestic n-butanol market prices continued to rise. Feedstock propylene remained at high levels and rose further, providing strong cost support. Production plants operated with low inventories, and spot supply in the market remained limited. Downstream players showed some resistance to high prices, so transaction volumes at high prices weakened somewhat.

3. Production Dynamics

Today, domestic n-butanol capacity utilization was 76%. Feedstock propylene prices rose, and n-butanol currently earns a profit of around RMB 942/mt.

4. Price Forecast

At present, feedstock propylene is running at high levels, and cost-side support for n-butanol prices remains strong. However, downstream players are somewhat resistant to high prices, and market inquiries and transactions have cooled. Nevertheless, maintenance units have not yet restarted, factory inventories are low, and market supply is on the low side. Market prices are expected to fluctuate at high levels.

5. Related Products

2-Ethylhexanol Market: Today, domestic 2-ethylhexanol market prices continued to rise. Because 2-ethylhexanol has risen sharply this week, it is currently at a high for the year. Downstream users' purchasing enthusiasm is moderate, and market participants are largely waiting and seeing. Profit-taking sellers are offering slightly lower prices. Spot inventories in the market are low, and the overall market remains at high levels.

I see n-butanol's gain as feedstock cost-led, with low stocks supporting. Risk: downstream butyl acrylate utilization at 56% may resist hikes and squeeze margins, so I expect firm but capped prices near term.
