Ethylene carbonate (1,3-dioxolan-2-one, CAS 96-49-1) is a white crystalline solid at room temperature (melting point 35–38°C) with high water solubility and a cyclic carbonate structure. It functions primarily as a high-polarity solvent and as a key electrolyte component in lithium-ion batteries.

Battery electrolytes: a critical solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolytes, particularly in EC-based systems that are compatible with graphite anodes.
Industrial solvent: dissolves inorganic salts such as heavy-metal chlorides, plus polymers like nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, and acrylic resins.
Chemical intermediate: a raw material for producing derivatives such as vinyl ethylene carbonate and other specialty carbonates.

China's production landscape is dominated by battery-grade material, with capacity concentrated among a few suppliers that can enter major electrolyte supply chains. Manufacturing routes include ethylene oxide–carbon dioxide addition and ester exchange processes. Domestic capacity has expanded in recent years, with some output consumed captively for downstream derivatives rather than sold on the open market.
