Why is NMP considered hazardous to human health in battery and electronics manufacturing?
NMP is a high-polarity aprotic solvent with low volatility and good thermal stability, but its health profile demands respect. Contact irritates eyes and skin, and repeated exposure can trigger dermatitis with blistering or cracking. Inhalation of concentrated vapor causes headache, dizziness and nausea, while ingestion brings vertigo and gastric irritation. It is flammable, with a flash point near 99C. Regulators have taken note: NMP was added to the EU REACH restricted substances list in 2018, and the US EPA selected it among the first ten chemicals for risk evaluation. Chinese battery plants must therefore control emissions and recover waste NMP rather than vent it.

Occupational exposure is only half the story. NMP carries recognized reproductive toxicity, yet China's hazardous waste identification standards still lack a reproductive-toxicity test method. That gap means much lithium battery NMP waste gets classified as general solid waste without proper assessment, leaving a real regulatory blind spot for recyclers and generators alike.
