Weak demand weighs on toluene, which is showing signs of a phase-wise peak

Published on 2026-10-16

Lead-in: In October, international crude oil prices remained elevated and showed upward momentum, supported by geopolitical disruptions. This provided stable cost support for toluene, keeping domestic market prices at high levels overall. However, in the Shandong region, toluene price fluctuations were notably more subdued compared to crude oil trends. Although the spread between pure benzene and toluene persisted—and remains the primary outlet for toluene consumption—other downstream sectors weakened collectively. Relying solely on this single pillar was insufficient to absorb total output, leading to an imbalance between production and sales, persistent sluggish shipments, and expectations of lowered posted prices among producers.

1. Toluene Prices Remain Elevated

In October, international crude oil prices continued to trend higher with some upward momentum. However, toluene prices in Shandong exhibited relatively flat volatility. While the spread between pure benzene and toluene was maintained, and pure benzene remained the main driver of toluene consumption, other downstream industries performed weakly. With support coming only from the pure benzene sector, refineries struggled to balance production and sales, resulting in continuous shipment difficulties and expectations of price reductions in posted quotes.

Additionally, the start-up of new units at Tangshan Dimu contributed incremental demand, while arbitrage opportunities for shipping toluene from Shandong to surrounding regions remained open. On the supply side, some refineries reduced operating rates for their crude processing units, slightly impacting toluene production volumes.

2. Xylene-Toluene Spread Reversal

In October, the average price spread between xylene and toluene reached -75 yuan/ton. As toluene prices significantly exceeded those of xylene, the volume of toluene blended into gasoline pools declined. Furthermore, the domestic gasoline market is approaching its seasonal off-peak period, slowing raw material consumption. Supported only by chemical-grade demand, monthly production-sales ratios for toluene enterprises stood at just 73%, leading to inventory accumulation. In contrast, xylene benefited from continued procurement by PX (paraxylene) producers, resulting in better overall production-sales performance than toluene.

3. Market Outlook

Cost Perspective: Support remains, but upward driving force is weakening. Risk premiums stemming from Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions will continue to provide a floor for crude oil prices, thereby offering cost support for toluene. However, weaker demand expectations and U.S. statements aimed at curbing oil prices act as offsetting factors, limiting upside potential for crude oil. Consequently, the push for toluene price increases from the cost side has diminished compared to early October.

Demand Perspective: Downstream demand structure continues to diverge, with pure benzene and TDI serving as the only stable pillars. Primary consumption remains concentrated in pure benzene (via disproportionation) and TDI sectors, both showing stable purchasing patterns. The start-up of new units at Tangshan Dimu adds incremental demand, and ongoing arbitrage windows for exporting toluene from Shandong can partially alleviate local inventory pressure. Conversely, sectors such as exports, fuel blending, and fine chemical solvents lack sufficient motivation to follow raw material market trends, showing limited buying interest. Additionally, the gasoline market’s entry into its seasonal low-demand period, combined with the reversed xylene-toluene spread reducing the economic incentive to blend toluene into gasoline, will lead to further declines in fuel-blending consumption.

Conclusion: Amidst the tug-of-war between cost support and weak demand, toluene prices have shown signs of reaching a short-term ceiling. In the near term, prices are likely to maintain sideways trading with a slight downward bias.

High crude costs prop up Shandong toluene, but weak downstream demand and inventory buildup cap upside. With the xylene-toluene spread reversed, margin pressure is mounting. I expect prices to plateau soon as seasonal sl..
