Supply-Demand Tug-of-War: Domestic Butadiene Market Shows Slight Upward Trend (Oct 23–29, 2026)

Published on 2026-10-29
  1. Key Highlights This Week:

① Uncertainty persists regarding developments in the Middle East, with crude oil and naphtha prices maintaining high-level volatility.

② Domestic facilities are experiencing a mix of restarts and shutdowns, with news emerging of export transactions for domestic supply.

③ Downstream demand is gradually recovering, leading to slight follow-up purchases based on genuine requirements.

  1. Market Overview for This Period:

During this period, the domestic butadiene market trended slightly stronger while consolidating. The geopolitical situation in the Middle East remains unclear, keeping crude oil and naphtha prices at elevated levels and providing strong cost-side support. Additionally, some facilities in the East China region underwent scheduled maintenance shutdowns during the week. News of export deals for domestic supply circulated, strengthening bullish sentiment among traders. This led to firm asking prices and a reluctance to sell at low levels. Meanwhile, downstream demand is gradually recovering, and facility operating rates are rising, resulting in a modest increase in procurement demand for butadiene. Although downstream users still resist high prices, finding low-priced supply is difficult, causing the market to consolidate on a slightly stronger note. As of the close on October 29, 2026, the mainstream delivered price for butadiene in Central Shandong was RMB 14,650–14,850/ton, and the ex-tank self-pickup price in Jiangsu was RMB 14,300–14,400/ton.

  1. Forecast for Next Period:

The domestic butadiene market is expected to remain slightly stronger within a narrow range next period. With crude oil prices consolidating at high levels, cost-side support will continue to provide a floor for the market. Additionally, planned shutdowns at some facilities in the East and South China regions are expected to reduce domestic output, further supporting prices. Traders are likely to maintain positive pricing attitudes with little willingness to offer discounts. On the demand side, as downstream industries recover profitability, facility operating rates are expected to rise, potentially increasing demand and boosting the market upward. However, considering persistent resistance to high prices from downstream users, transacting at elevated levels remains difficult, which may limit further upside potential. Therefore, the domestic butadiene market is projected to stay slightly stronger within a narrow range. The delivered price in Central Shandong is expected to be between RMB 14,000 and 15,000/ton. Caution and observation of domestic and international supply changes are advised.

High naphtha costs and export deals are supporting butadiene prices, yet downstream margin pressure limits demand recovery. With facility shutdowns tightening supply, I expect a short-term upward trend, though sustained ..
