Strong Cost-Side Support Leads to High-Level Volatility in the Domestic Butadiene Market (October 8–9, 2026)

Published on 2026-10-15
  1. Key Highlights for the Week:

① Crude oil prices fluctuated at high levels, providing bottom support on the cost side.
② Domestic supply saw minor adjustments, with limited impact on market direction.
③ Downstream demand recovery remains slow, creating significant resistance to transactions at high prices.

  1. Market Overview for This Period:

During this period, the domestic butadiene market exhibited weak fluctuations. Following the holiday break, Yangzi Petrochemical restarted its unit operations, while some units in Northeast and North China regions were shut down. The tight spot market situation eased, resulting in limited guidance from the supply side. Although downstream industry profits are gradually recovering, it takes time for enterprises to increase unit loads, leading to limited incremental demand. Downstream procurement of butadiene remained generally passive. While high crude oil prices provided certain bottom support to the market, cautious sentiment among buyers dragged down some sellers' offers slightly, resulting in a weak, fluctuating market trend. As of October 15, 2026, the delivered price in the Shandong Central Region was 13,150–13,250 RMB/ton, while the ex-tank self-pickup reference price in East China was 13,000 RMB/ton.

  1. Outlook for Next Period:

The Middle East geopolitical situation remains complex, potentially driving crude oil prices higher and strengthening cost-side support. Domestically, as some upstream units resume operation or maintain stable production, supply pressures may ease further. However, downstream rubber and plastics industries face continued margin pressure, likely limiting their willingness to chase high prices. Demand recovery is expected to remain gradual. Overall, the butadiene market is projected to trade within a narrow range, with potential for slight upward movement if crude oil surges significantly, though upside will be capped by weak downstream acceptance. Traders should monitor crude oil trends and downstream inventory levels closely.

Crude feedstock costs support butadiene prices, yet sluggish downstream demand limits upside. With minor supply shifts, I expect continued narrow-range trading as buyers remain passive despite recovering margins.
