Aluminium smelting: acts as the essential electrolyte solvent in the Hall–Héroult process, lowering alumina's melting point from over 2000°C to around 960°C.
Fluoride chemicals: a key intermediate or co-product in the inorganic fluoride value chain, linked to aluminium fluoride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride production.
Abrasives and ceramics: used as a flux or filler in some abrasive and ceramic applications.
