Cryolite's cost structure is tightly linked to fluorite, the primary feedstock for hydrogen fluoride and subsequent fluoride salts. China's fluorite production, historically centered in Zhejiang and now expanding in Hunan and Inner Mongolia, faces tightening environmental oversight, which pressures upstream costs. On the demand side, cryolite consumption is almost exclusively tied to electrolytic aluminum—unlike aluminum fluoride, which has broader uses in glass and ceramics. Therefore, any slowdown or expansion in Chinese aluminum smelting capacity directly moves cryolite procurement volumes. Recent volatility in aluminum prices, influenced by geopolitical disruptions and energy costs, adds another layer of uncertainty. Producers also recover cryolite from smelter waste streams, offering a secondary supply that partially buffers against raw material spikes, though purity and quality control remain critical for efficient electrolysis.
