Beyond spot prices, watch the structural shift: Korean buyers are accelerating qualification of domestic and Chinese PGMEA sources. SK Hynix already uses Peric from China, giving it more buffer than Samsung. The crisis may permanently diversify supply away from Japan-dependent routes.
For buyers, locking in quarterly contracts now may be prudent. Historical patterns suggest such spikes correct within 6-9 months once alternative supply routes stabilize. Chinese capacity expansions in electronic-grade PGMEA could accelerate, potentially capping the upside for domestic buyers.
The real bottleneck is not capacity but quality consistency. Chinese producers can make electronic-grade PGMEA, but fab qualification cycles of 2+ years slow adoption. The current supply crisis may actually accelerate qualification of Chinese sources as Korean and Japanese fabs seek alternatives.
