It is immiscible with water but miscible with organic solvents, and serves as a key aromatic hydrocarbon intermediate in the chemical industry.

Industrial: primary raw material for isophthalic acid (PIA) production, which is used in unsaturated polyester resins and PET copolymers.
Solvent: used in printing, rubber, leather, coatings, and varnish industries as a diluent and cleaning agent.
Fuel: a component in unleaded gasoline alongside toluene.
Chemical synthesis: undergoes electrophilic substitution readily; its 2,4,6-positions are activated by two methyl groups, making it the fastest-reacting xylene isomer in halogenation and related reactions.
