In the broader market context, ferrous sulfate's role extends beyond pharmaceuticals into food fortification, where it is added to flour and cereals to combat anemia. Its antioxidant properties also help extend shelf life in processed meats and beverages. This dual nutritional and preservative function supports steady demand in the food-grade segment, which commands premium pricing over industrial grades.
The pricing structure reflects this bifurcation. Industrial-grade 96% material was quoted around 1,200-1,350 yuan per ton in late August 2026, while 98% purity reached about 1,700 yuan and 30% iron-content product hit 2,500 yuan. Buyers should note that purity premiums are widening as LFP producers demand consistent quality, making specification verification critical in procurement contracts.
For industrial buyers, this oxidation problem matters beyond horticulture. In water treatment, ferrous sulfate works as a coagulant only after Fe2+ is oxidized to Fe3+, requiring pH control around 8-9 and sufficient oxygenation. If oxidation is incomplete, residual ferrous iron discolors effluent and depletes dissolved oxygen. For chromium reduction, however, acidic conditions around pH 2.5-3.0 are optimal, so application pH dictates performance entirely.
