Chromium(VI) oxide (chromic anhydride, CAS 1333-82-0) is a dark red crystalline solid with a melting point of 196°C and high water solubility. It is a potent, toxic oxidising agent used mainly in metal finishing and chemical synthesis.

Industrial: key raw material for chromium plating, passivation, and wood preservation.
Chemical synthesis: oxidises hydrocarbons to alcohols, alkyl aromatics to ketones and acids, and alkenes to α,β-unsaturated ketones.
