Chromium trioxide is classified as a Group 1 human carcinogen by IARC, with inhalation exposure linked to lung, nasal, and sinus cancers. Acute oral toxicity is LD50 80 mg/kg in rats. Chronic skin contact can cause chrome ulcers and dermatitis, while respiratory exposure may lead to nasal septum perforation and asthma. In China, hexavalent chromium compounds are listed in the Priority Control Chemicals Catalog and the Toxic and Hazardous Water Pollutants Catalog. Environmental releases occur from electroplating, leather tanning, textile production, and cement manufacturing. Aquatic organisms including algae, crustaceans, and fish are particularly sensitive to hexavalent chromium, necessitating strict wastewater treatment and handling protocols.
