Bromine (Br₂, CAS 7726-95-6) is a dark reddish-brown, fuming liquid at room temperature and the only non-metallic element that is liquid under ambient conditions. It is a highly reactive halogen with strong oxidizing and corrosive properties, serving as a key industrial chemical intermediate.

Flame retardants: a major feedstock for brominated flame retardants used in electronics, building materials, and EV battery components.
Semiconductors: converted into hydrogen bromide (HBr) for plasma etching in DRAM and NAND flash chip manufacturing.
Water treatment: used in bromine-based biocides for disinfection and industrial cooling systems.
Pharmaceuticals & other: historically used in bromine salts for sedatives; also applied in oilfield, refrigeration, and cleaning sectors.

China is the world's third-largest bromine producer, with output concentrated in Shandong, Tianjin, and Hebei, mainly via air-blown or steam-distillation processes. Domestic production has declined while import dependence has risen sharply, with supply highly concentrated in Israel and Jordan, making the market sensitive to geopolitical disruptions.
