Benzoic acid (benzenecarboxylic acid, CAS 65-85-0) is a white crystalline solid with a faint, pleasant odour, slightly soluble in water and with a melting point of 121–125°C. It is a stable aromatic carboxylic acid used primarily as a preservative and as a chemical intermediate.

Food: used to produce sodium benzoate, an antimicrobial agent that inhibits mould and yeast growth in beverages, sauces, and other foods.
Pharmaceutical: a key intermediate in the synthesis of drugs including antibiotics and antihypertensives, and used topically as an antifungal agent.
Industrial: an intermediate for dyes, plasticisers, fragrances, and alkyd resins, and increasingly used in the production of synthetic fibres.
Personal care: applied in cosmetics and topical preparations for its preservative and antifungal properties.

China is a major global producer, with output dominated by industrial-grade material via toluene liquid-phase oxidation. The country is also a significant exporter, and production capacity has been expanding to meet downstream demand from food preservatives and chemical intermediates. Recent research has explored electrocatalytic and ring-opening routes to broaden its synthetic utility.
