Aromatics (芳烃) are hydrocarbon compounds containing one or more benzene rings, typically liquid at room temperature, and serve as fundamental building blocks for synthetic fibres, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and solvents. The core BTX trio—benzene, toluene, and xylene—anchors the petrochemical value chain, with para-xylene (PX) being the most significant derivative.

Fibre & textiles: PX converts to PTA and then PET, feeding polyester filament and staple production for apparel and home textiles.
Industrial materials: benzene and xylene feed styrene, phenol, caprolactam, and other monomers for resins, engineering plastics, and synthetic rubber.
Fuels & solvents: aromatics serve as high-octane gasoline blending components and industrial extraction solvents.
Pharmaceuticals & agrochemicals: used as intermediates for drugs, pesticides, and dyes.

China is the world's largest aromatics producer, consumer, and trade hub, accounting for roughly half of global PX capacity. Production relies primarily on catalytic reforming of naphtha within integrated refining complexes, with coal-to-aromatics routes under development. The country remains a net importer of PX and benzene, while downstream PTA–PET capacity faces oversupply pressure.
