1,2-Dichloropropane (propylene dichloride, CAS 78-87-5) is a colorless to pale-yellow liquid with a chloroform-like odor, a density of 1.156 g/mL at 25°C, a boiling point of 95–96°C, and a melting point of −100°C. It is a flammable, moderately toxic chlorinated solvent used mainly as an industrial intermediate and solvent.

Industrial: used as a solvent for oils, fats, waxes, resins, and synthetic rubbers, and as a co-solvent with acetone for cellulose ethers and esters.
Chemical synthesis: a raw material for producing chlorinated propylenes, propylene glycol esters, and other organic intermediates.
Pesticides & agrochemicals: a feedstock for manufacturing pesticides and insecticides.
Other applications: used in detergents, adhesives, paints, inks, and PVC adhesives, and as an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis.

In China, 1,2-dichloropropane is largely a by-product of the chlorohydrin route to propylene oxide, and commercial grades vary widely in quality and price. Domestic supply is generally sufficient, with production concentrated in integrated chlor-alkali and propylene oxide complexes; new capacity has been added in recent years. The material is classified as a Class 3 flammable liquid (UN 1279, packing group II) and is subject to strict handling and export controls.
