Why is paraformaldehyde classified as dangerous goods and what does export compliance involve?

Paraformaldehyde is a Class 4.1 flammable solid under UN2213, packing group III, with a flash point of 71.1°C. It releases formaldehyde gas when heated, posing irritation and fire risks. Exporting from China requires a full compliance package: a 16-section MSDS, a hazardous characteristics classification report from an authorized body like CCIC or Shanghai Chemical Institute, and a dangerous goods packaging certificate confirming the bags meet IMDG standards. Shipments must be stuffed at a maritime-approved dangerous goods warehouse, not a regular depot. Vessel booking needs the UN number, class, and packaging details, with strict segregation from oxidizers and foodstuffs. VGM submission is mandatory before loading. For a 20GP container to Durban, cargo must be stacked evenly and secured with safety netting to prevent shifting during ocean transit.

Many buyers overlook that paraformaldehyde's CAS number is often miswritten as 3052-89-4 instead of 30525-89-4 on shipping documents. That single typo can delay customs clearance and incur demurrage, so double-check all paperwork before the container leaves the warehouse.
