How is paraformaldehyde demand split across downstream sectors and export regions?

Paraformaldehyde consumption is led by agrochemical intermediates, which account for over 30% of global demand, primarily for glyphosate, acetochlor, and butachlor production. Synthetic resins and adhesives form the second-largest outlet, where solid formaldehyde replaces liquid formalin to cut dehydration energy and wastewater. Higher-purity grades (95-97%) serve pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis, including vitamin A and cephalosporin intermediates. On the trade side, Southeast Asia is the top export destination for Chinese material, absorbing roughly 35-40% of shipments, with Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand as core buyers. India and Pakistan follow at 20-25%, driven by pesticide manufacturing, while South America takes about 15%, led by Brazil's herbicide sector. The Middle East and North Africa account for 10-15%, mainly for oilfield chemicals and resins.

The agrochemical linkage means paraformaldehyde demand often tracks glyphosate planting seasons in Brazil and Southeast Asia. Q1 and Q3 typically see stronger offtake, so inventory planning should align with those cycles rather than calendar-year averages.
