Which plants can supply large volumes of cineole for commercial extraction?
Cineole is not a single-source molecule. Eucalyptus species such as Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus radiata dominate commercial supply, with essential oil content reaching 70-90%. Melaleuca species including tea tree and niaouli offer 40-60%, while cineole-type rosemary can reach 40-50%. Alpinia species, camphor chemotypes and even cardamom seed oil contribute smaller volumes. For buyers, this matters because feedstock choice drives both price and purity. Eucalyptus-derived material remains the benchmark grade for pharmaceutical and food-flavor applications, while alternative botanical sources are typically positioned toward fragrance, feed additive or industrial use where specification tolerance is wider.

Feedstock diversity is a double-edged sword. It cushions supply shocks when one harvest falters, but buyers should verify the botanical origin on the certificate of analysis. Cineole from non-eucalyptus sources can carry different trace impurity profiles, which may fail pharmacopoeia monographs even when assay purity looks acceptable on paper.
