Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Cost and Profit Analysis as of October 29, 2026

Published on 2026-10-29

Chempricehub reported on October 29 that, based on its data estimates, the current weekly average cost of vinyl acetate produced via the calcium carbide method in China is RMB 6,647.5 per ton. The unit consumption of vinyl acetate for producing one ton of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) ranges from approximately 1.7 to 1.9 tons. Consequently, the theoretical weekly average cost of PVA stands at RMB 8,220.25 per ton. Using Great Wall Energy & Chemical’s listed price of RMB 1,799 as a reference, the theoretical gross margin—including crude methyl acetate—is RMB 4,479.75 per ton.

PVA margins look robust at RMB 4,479/ton despite the calcium carbide route. However, I’m cautious about downstream demand sustainability and potential capacity utilization shifts if feedstock costs fluctuate.
