The octanol market declined slightly this week before rebounding. The Shandong market closed at 8,800-8,900 yuan/ton on Thursday, up 250 yuan/ton from last Thursday's close. After the market rose to a phase high last week, buyers showed obvious resistance, and the market center of gravity edged lower. This week, with renewed escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, international crude oil prices jumped sharply, pushing feedstock propylene prices significantly higher. This also stimulated replenishment by end-users and short-covering buyers, gradually lifting the market's transaction center of gravity. Spot supply remained tight throughout the week. At the beginning of the month, producers prioritized contract customers, while spot trading was mainly concluded in small lots.

  1. Next Week Market Forecast

  2. Supply: Domestic octanol unit operating rates are expected to rise slightly, with supply increasing modestly.

  3. Demand: Downstream will purchase on a need-to basis, unit operations remain stable, and demand for octanol is expected to remain steady.

  4. Cost: Feedstock propylene prices are expected to run weak, pushing costs lower.

Next week, domestic octanol unit operating rates are likely to rise slightly, but the tight market situation will ease only to a limited extent. Downstream users will prioritize contract execution at the beginning of the month, with generally moderate enthusiasm for spot purchases. Feedstock propylene prices are expected to fluctuate lower. Octanol profit margins remain relatively ample, while downstream DOP and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate products are loss-making, so buyers will be cautious in purchasing high-priced spot octanol. International crude oil continues to fluctuate in a wide range, which will have some impact on market sentiment. Overall, the octanol market center of gravity is expected to remain firm next week.

I see tight supply and feedstock cost pressure squeezing octanol margins despite firmer prices. With DOP/DOTP utilization weak, buyers may stay cautious; next week’s supply will show if this center of gravity can hold.
