How is ethylbenzene demand tied to styrene production in China?
Ethylbenzene is almost exclusively an intermediate for styrene monomer, and China's styrene industry has consolidated into three competing groups. State giants Sinopec and PetroChina operate roughly 3 million tonnes per year of styrene capacity, mostly via ethylbenzene dehydrogenation at traditional refining bases. Private refiners such as Rongsheng, Hengli and Shenghong now control over 4.2 million tonnes, leveraging integrated crude-to-aromatics chains that cut feedstock costs from 75% to 65% of total. Foreign-invested players like BASF, LyondellBasell and CNOOC Shell use PO/SM co-production. This structure means ethylbenzene demand tracks styrene operating rates closely, and any styrene capacity closure directly removes ethylbenzene offtake.
