How does the 1,2-LPB resin structure affect its performance in coatings and adhesives?
1,2-polybutadiene resin is a low-molecular-weight liquid whose main chain is dominated by 1,2-structures, giving it many pendant vinyl side groups. Under free-radical initiation, these side chains crosslink into a three-dimensional network. The resin is synthesized via anionic polymerization of butadiene using alkyl lithium, sodium metal or soluble alkali metal complexes like sodium-naphthalene systems. Because the macromolecular chain is entirely hydrocarbon, cured 1,2-LPB exhibits excellent electrical insulation, good flexural strength and outstanding water resistance. These properties make it suitable for electronic encapsulants, circuit board protective coatings and structural adhesives where moisture resistance and dielectric performance are critical. The high vinyl content also allows tailoring of crosslink density, which influences hardness and toughness in final formulations.
