How does refinery hydrocracking and coking capacity change naphtha availability for HDS units?
Heavy-oil upgrading is the hidden lever on naphtha supply. At Zhejiang Petrochemical, wax-oil hydrocracking yields roughly 64% naphtha, diesel hydrocracking 53%, and coking only 15%. With 7.6 million tonnes of wax-oil hydrocracking, 16 million tonnes of diesel hydrocracking, and 6 million tonnes of residue slurry hydrocracking, the site can add about 7.57 million tonnes of naphtha in phase one. That is why chemical-type private refiners reach a 56% chemicals yield, far above ordinary plants. More hydrocracking means more naphtha requiring hydrodesulfurization before cracking or reforming.

Residue slurry hydrocracking is the swing factor. It accepts almost any feedstock and lifts liquid yield above 90%, so it boosts naphtha volumes but also pushes more sulfur and nitrogen into the cut. HDS catalyst life and hydrogen consumption, not crude selection, will set the real operating cost for these barrels.
