How does R134a compare with R410A and R290 for different cooling applications?
R134a remains the dominant choice for automotive air conditioning and refrigerators due to its zero ODP, A1 safety classification, and close thermodynamic match to the banned R12. However, its GWP of around 1300-1430 makes it a greenhouse gas under scrutiny. R410A, a near-azeotropic blend, operates at higher pressures and is preferred for new residential and commercial AC systems, offering better energy efficiency per unit but requiring POE lubricants. R290 (propane) is gaining traction in heat pump dryers and small systems because it has near-zero GWP and is cost-effective, but its A3 flammability limits use in larger or retrofit applications. For data centers, R134a is often chosen for medium-temperature cooling due to safety, while R410A suits high-density cooling loads. The trend is toward lower-GWP alternatives, but R134a's installed base and cost advantage keep it relevant through the current quota period.

    For buyers, the practical issue is retrofitting. R134a systems cannot simply switch to R290 or R410A without changing lubricants, seals, and expansion devices. Also, R134a has strong water absorption, 20 times that of R22, so drier maintenance is critical. Factor in total lifecycle cost, not just refrigerant price, when selecting a system.
