How are bio-based production routes reshaping China's 1-butanol supply landscape?

China is witnessing early-stage investment in non-fossil butanol capacity. A notable example is Hairui Bio's 10,000-ton/year project in Jilin's Songyuan Petrochemical Park, which will use straw sugar liquor as feedstock to produce 6,000 tons of n-butanol, 3,000 tons of acetone, and 1,000 tons of ethanol annually. The 87.61 million yuan investment leverages existing standardized plants, indicating lower capital intensity for fermentation-based routes. While conventional oxo synthesis remains dominant globally, these pilot projects signal growing policy and corporate interest in biomass-derived butanol, potentially diversifying feedstock sources and reducing carbon footprints in the medium term.
