Introduction: Since the end of the National Day holiday, the domestic 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) market has been driven by alternating cost and supply factors. Prices have risen consecutively, gradually breaking through year-to-date highs, with this week seeing market focus stabilizing at elevated levels.
I. Cost and Supply Factors Drive 2-EH Market to Year-to-Date Highs
1. Sharp Rise in Propylene Feedstock Prices; 2-EH Prices Follow Gradually
Taking Shandong propylene spot prices as an example, before the National Day holiday, the market price was 9,740 yuan/ton. Post-holiday, it surged rapidly to 10,745 yuan/ton in a short period, accumulating a rise of 1,005 yuan/ton, or a 10.32% increase. This indicates a significant upward shift in the center of gravity for feedstock prices.
Driven by the sharp rise in propylene prices, the raw material cash cost for 2-EH also increased significantly. In early October, the spot production cost for 2-EH in Shandong peaked near 9,600 yuan/ton. The cost side provided strong momentum to the 2-EH market, leading to markedly increased cash cost pressure on producers during the first half of the month.
From the perspective of price transmission rhythm, the increase in 2-EH market prices did not keep pace with feedstock costs. Due to inventory accumulation at 2-EH plants during the holiday, producers focused primarily on digesting stocks and steadily pushing up prices post-holiday. Consequently, the market center of gravity rose slowly, and the magnitude of price increases was notably smaller than that of raw material costs. This mismatch between rapidly rising costs and sluggish price increases led to negative margins (cost-price inversion) for 2-EH spot products in mid-to-late October, thereby dampening the operational enthusiasm of 2-EH units.
2. Decline in 2-EH Supply; Demand Gradually Recovering
This week, Nanjing Chengzhi’s 2-EH unit entered planned shutdown maintenance, causing the overall domestic capacity utilization rate to fall to 69%. This operating level is within the lower-middle range for the year, indicating a clear contraction in domestic 2-EH supply. Meanwhile, previously shut-down 2-EH units in the East China region have not yet resumed production, further tightening spot circulation volumes in the area. As East China is a core demand hub for domestic 2-EH, the tight spot market situation continues to intensify.
After mid-month, the demand side for 2-EH also began to improve. Operating loads in the key downstream plasticizer industry rose steadily this week, reaching medium-to-high levels, leading to a steady increase in 2-EH demand. The 2-EH industry saw overall destocking, reducing inventory pressure on major producers. Supported by the combination of supply contraction, recovery in rigid demand, and low inventories, producers’ willingness to maintain high prices strengthened, supporting the continued upward push of the domestic 2-EH spot market center of gravity this week.
II. Short-term 2-EH Market Expected to Remain Strong
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain elevated, keeping international crude oil prices at high levels. Market participants are becoming more cautious about bearish sentiment regarding future prospects. Propylene feedstock prices are expected to maintain high-level volatility, providing strong support to the 2-EH cost side. The fluctuation range of costs remains high, offering certain support to the 2-EH market.
Downstream plasticizer enterprises hold low spot raw material inventories and face rigid restocking needs as the month-end approaches, leading to phased essential buying. Overall, with sustained tight supply, solid cost support, downstream users making essential purchases based on need, and the macro atmosphere driven by crude oil, the center of gravity for the 2-EH market at month-end is likely to continue trending strongly.
Entering November, the supply of 2-EH is expected to see a notable increase. Industry competitive pressures may intensify again, potentially dragging down the market center of gravity over time.
