Can China's Organic Chemicals exports keep growing amid global overcapacity?
China now accounts for roughly 44 percent of global chemical sales, and 2024 exports reached 18,672 billion yuan with a widening trade surplus. Basic organic chemicals alone have held monthly export values above 300 billion yuan for twelve consecutive months, growing 9.4 percent in early 2025. The EU, US and India are the top destinations, but market diversification is accelerating. The constraint is structural: exports remain concentrated in basic chemicals and plastics, with high-end products a small share. Capacity going overseas, not just product exports, is becoming the strategic answer to domestic oversupply.

The export story is real but the mix is the problem. Basic chemicals face anti-dumping risk in every major market. Moving up the value chain or building plants abroad are the only durable paths. Watch announcements of overseas capacity investment as the leading indicator.
