Analysis of the Impact of Tight Methanol Supply on Market Dynamics

Published on 2026-11-04

Chempricehub, November 4:

Iran remains the largest source of methanol imports for China. Constrained by geopolitical tensions, feedstock gas availability, and shipping logistics, most Iranian plants continue to operate at low rates or remain shut down. Only limited capacity at ZPC (one line), Bushehr, and Arian is running at low load. Consequently, Iran’s October shipment volumes remained at historic lows.

Market institutions forecast a month-over-month increase in China’s methanol arrivals in November, estimated at 440,000–520,000 tonnes. However, a substantial recovery is unlikely due to the slow pace of supply release, meaning short-term supply will struggle to return to normal historical levels. The risk to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz persists; any renewed escalation in regional tensions could rapidly drive up foreign CFR prices and freight premiums.
