Opinions

What does Europe's chemical downturn mean for propionic acid sourcing and pricing?

Don't assume European exit equals easy Chinese wins. Feed-additive customers require strict quality and regulatory approvals, so switching suppliers takes time. The practical takeaway for buyers is to lock in multi-year contracts now while European supply is still reliable, rather than scrambling once capacity actually closes.

Why is Luxi Chemical expanding propionic acid capacity when global competition is already intense?

Scale is a double-edged sword. If Luxi's Phase II lands while European demand stays weak, the market could tip into oversupply and compress margins industry-wide. The smarter read is that Luxi is positioning for export markets, not just domestic volume, so watch its export volumes rather than its nameplate capacity.

Overview

Propionic acid (propanoic acid, CAS 79-09-4) is a colourless, oily liquid with a pungent, sour odour, a melting point of −24 to −23 °C, a boiling point of 141 °C, and a density of 0.993 g/mL at 25 °C. It is a short-chain saturated fatty acid widely used as a preservative, antifungal agent, and organic synthesis intermediate.

Food & feed: acts as a preservative and mould inhibitor for grains, feed, and food products, and is used in flavouring formulations.
Pesticides: a key intermediate for herbicides such as propanil and other agrochemicals.
Pharmaceuticals: used to produce drug intermediates like vitamin B6 and naproxen, and in antifungal topical preparations.
Industrial: raw material for propionate salts, esters, cellulose acetate propionate, and solvents.

China's production has grown steadily, with output reaching about 81,200 tonnes in 2022, driven by new capacity from domestic players. The country was a net exporter in 2022, with imports around 16,700 tonnes and exports about 20,300 tonnes. Consumption is led by grain and feed preservation, followed by pesticide intermediates and pharmaceutical/flavour applications.

Key domestic producers:
Yangzi BASF – largest producer, using BASF technology with two units.
Luxi Chemical – major domestic producer actively expanding capacity.
