Nitric acid (HNO₃, CAS 7697-37-2) is a colourless, fuming, highly corrosive strong acid with a pungent odour, historically derived from nitre (potassium nitrate) and hence named "nitric" rather than "azotic" acid. It is a core industrial inorganic acid used across fertilisers, chemicals, and metallurgy.

Fertilisers: key feedstock for ammonium nitrate and nitrate-based fertilisers.
Industrial chemicals: raw material for nitrobenzene, aniline, TDI, adipic acid, and other organic intermediates.
Metallurgy & electronics: used for metal pickling, etching, and cleaning in semiconductor and stainless-steel processing.
