Ketoprofen (ketoprofen, 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)propionic acid, CAS 22071-15-4) is a white crystalline powder, practically odourless, sparingly soluble in water but freely soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, and ether, with a melting point of 93–96°C. It is a non-selective COX inhibitor of the arylpropionic acid class, used as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity.

Pharmaceutical: used for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gouty arthritis, and various pains including dysmenorrhea, toothache, post-surgical pain, and cancer pain.
Clinical comparison: its anti-inflammatory effect is stronger than ibuprofen, with lower side effects and toxicity; oral absorption is rapid, with peak plasma concentration at 0.5–2 h and a half-life of 1.6–1.9 h.
Mechanism: inhibits prostaglandin synthesis; the S-isomer is more active than the R-isomer, and the S-enantiomer shows much higher COX-2 inhibitory activity.
